Guidelines for Authors

Authorship Criteria

The Northern Journal of Medical Sciences follows the guidelines laid down by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) and the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) while receiving, processing, and publication of research manuscripts. The Northern Journal of Medical Sciences will consider a right to authorship ONLY when ALL four of the authorship criteria of ICJME are met. These criteria are as follows:

  1. Significant involvement in the research project, contributing to all phases of the research, including the inception of the research work; the design of the research; the gathering of data; the analysis of the data after collection; or the interpretation of the data after analysis; AND
  2. Active involvement in the drafting of the research manuscript or its critical revision in relation to the intellectual content’s significance; AND
  3. Active participation in the final approval of the manuscript version that is prepared for publication; AND
  4. A readiness to assume responsibility for the entire research project, facilitating the investigation and resolution of the research work’s integrity and accuracy.

Acknowledgment Criteria

The contributions of all individuals whose involvement in the research work does not meet the above criteria can be recognized in a separate section at the end of the manuscript. Examples of such contributors might include, but are not limited to:

  • Individuals who assisted in securing research funding
  • Supervisors who oversaw the research but did not actively participate
  • Individuals who offered assistance in study design, manuscript review, manuscript writing assistance, proofreading for the authors, editorial support for technical and language matters, etc.
  • Colleagues who assisted in identifying cases for the research, laboratory procedures assistance, etc.
  • Statisticians who assisted in the analysis of collected data through the application of appropriate statistical tests.

Inclusion in the Author List

Declaration of Contributions

The North J Med Sci maintains a strict policy that prohibits the addition, modification, or removal of authors from the list initially submitted to the journal. As part of North J Med Sci’s manuscript submission guidelines, the original manuscript must include a detailed account of each author’s individual contributions at the time of initial submission. To assist authors in this process, an Author’s Undertaking and Contributions form is available for download on the journal’s website.

Designated Corresponding Author

The Northern Journal of Medical Sciences will engage in communication with the author identified as the corresponding author during the submission process. This author is expected to collaborate with the journal in providing any additional data or information that may be requested during or after the publication of the manuscript. Therefore, the corresponding author should supply a functional email address that is checked regularly to respond to any inquiries from the editorial board regarding the manuscript throughout the submission and peer review process after initial submission. Furthermore, the corresponding author is expected to respond to all critiques and queries following the publication of a research manuscript.

Authors Who Passed Away Prior to Publication

The application of a death dagger symbol (†) is recommended to indicate authors who passed away before the research was published. The death dagger (†) should be positioned immediately after their names, and a footnote should provide information about their passing and the date of death.
